SYLLABLES

A hyphen is used in the pronunciation to show syllabic division. These hyphens sometimes coincide with the bold periods in the entry word that indicate end-of-line division; sometimes they do not:

Main Entry: ab.sen.tee
Pronunciation: "ab-s&n-'tE

Main Entry: ¹met.ric
Pronunciation: 'me-trik
