Solaris exp tree development to move from 2.3 to 2.5

Due to the decreasing number of Sun workstations running Solaris 2.3 the CSCF will cease continued development of the Solaris 2.3 exp tree.

Beginning with the next build cycle (Summer 1996) we will move our builds from Solaris 2.3 to Solaris 2.5. Disk space considerations on the exp tree servers preclude maintaining two Solaris trees. Because of this, all future Solaris exp tree development will be done on Solaris 2.5. Since backward compatibility cannot be guaranteed, software builds for the Solaris 2.3 exp tree will, in effect, stop. The change over to Solaris 2.5 executables will be incremental. Solaris 2.3 executables will remain on the exp tree for some time (generally through the 2nd upgrade of a current application). However, no further special announcements concerning the removal of a Solaris 2.3 exectuable will be made. Solaris 2.5 executables will be added through the normal build procedure.

Current users with machines running Solaris 2.3 or Solaris 2.4 should consider making arrangements to upgrade their systems to Solaris 2.5 or to make local copies of the current Solaris 2.3 exp tree. If you have any questions or concerns please send mail to system@cs.umass.edu.
